Meet the Success Coach for Western Harnett's Dropout Prevention Program

This is my 28th year as a school social worker. I am a Harnett County native and grew up in the Broadway area. I graduated from Western Harnett High School and attended Meredith College in Raleigh, earning my social work degree and K-12 certificate through DPI.   After college, my first job was with Harnett County Schools as their first school social worker for the district. I worked in the Harnett Central and Triton attendance areas, where I served 11 schools and helped develop the county's social work program. 

 After 13 years with Harnett County Schools and two children, my husband and I relocated to Tennessee for seven years.  I worked as a Behavior Support Specialist/Social Worker in a Behavior Support Program with the Clarksville Montgomery County School System.  Since returning to North Carolina in 2014, I have been working with Harnett County Schools in the Student Support Services' Dropout Prevention Program as a Success Coach.  I now serve the Western Harnett attendance area, and it is nice to be working in the community I grew up in as a child. 

     As a Success Coach, I work with at-risk students and their families to develop a plan to help them stay in school and graduate. I assist by educating them about alternative programs and resources available in our schools and communities.  My job is gratifying and rewarding to me, both professionally and personally.  My passion has always been helping students succeed. I always advocate for my students and their families. I encourage them to believe in themselves by giving them the skills necessary to overcome obstacles, teaching them not to let their challenging circumstances dictate their path but to take their destiny into their own hands. I am a support for them throughout the process, cheering them on and encouraging them to accomplish the goals they have set for themselves.  The result is seeing those students walk across the stage, diploma in hand, believing in themselves and their future.
