School History
Overhills High School educates over 1800 students using 102 educational staff members. The modern, 240,000 square foot educational facility was opened in 2004 after division from Western Harnett High School due to increased population growth in the region. Since its inception, the school staff has worked to cultivate an identity based on diversity, empowerment, and rigorous academics designed to provide educational advancement for all students.
The school’s first principal was Mr. Phil Ferrell, who left Overhills after 2 years to become an assistant superintendent and later superintendent of Harnett County Schools. Mr. Ferrell was replaced by Mr. John Castranio in 2006, who served as the school’s principal until December 2011. Dr. Kylon Jerome Middleton served as principal from 2012-2014, Cicily A. McCrimmon served from 2014-2016, Steve Matthews served from 2016-2018, and Chris Pearson served from 2018-2023. Justin Booker s the current principal of Overhills High School, beginning his tenure in July of 2023..
Throughout its brief history, Overhills High School’s Army JROTC program has continued to be a shining example of community service and achievement, for which it has won numerous awards in consecutive years.
The students of Overhills High School have distinguished themselves as state officers and national qualifiers in Future Business Leaders of America. The school marching band has achieved superior ratings in all county, region, and state competitions. Overhills student organizations continue to excel in the arts and CTE programs as the school continues to be a foundation in the community, district, and state.
Athletics has served as a strong rallying point for the young school. On top of having two individual state champions in track and field, the school boasts NCHSAA playoff participants in many varsity sports and continues to build excellence on the playing field while maintaining it in the classroom.
